Lady Bird Lake - 02 Oct 2015

It’s been a while since I’ve done an old-fashioned written report on the forum here, so I figured I’d go ahead and throw one up here for what it’s worth. I hit Lady Bird Lake last week with a friend just to go test the bite out there, poke around, and see what was goin’ on. We fished from about 7:30 AM - 1:00 PM. Conditions were nice. The morning temps were just a little cooler than they have been, mostly sunny all day, very slight breeze, and the air temps didn’t even make us break a sweat all day! Water clarity throughout most of the lake was pretty dirty, maybe 2-3 ft visibility, I don’t really remember, but there were some areas where it was a little clearer with 4-5 ft visibility.

We put our first couple of fish in the boat early (2 lbers) at our first stop fishing a T-rigged worm near a bridge. We didn’t fish there long though because I wanted to try some topwaters and reaction baits around shoreline cover and around submerged vegetation. Spent the next couple of hours just fishing down different shorelines with various topwaters and reactions baits with absolutely nothing to show for it. By about 11-11:30 or so, we finally came to some good looking matted vegetation, and busted out the flipping stick to start punching. We started getting several bites, but were pretty off of our game and lost most of them. I lost two dragging them over the grass, broke one off, and missed a couple of bites, but my buddy managed to actually put a couple of healthy, chunky 2-3 pounders in the boat. I was flipping a large 1.5oz jig, and I had him using a PowerTeam Lures Bully Grass Devil rigged with a 1oz River2Sea Trash Bomb tungsten sinker and 5/0 River2Sea Jack Flippin’ Hook. That Jack Flippin’ Hook seemed to keep those fish pegged a little better than my super old hand-tied 1.5 oz jig did.

Once it seemed like we had gotten all of the bites we were going to get out of the area we were at, we decided to move on and try fishing some bridges again to finish up the last hour. Caught another 5 or 6 fish over the next hour on a few different Texas-rigged worms. At about 12:45, I managed to put an “over” in the boat, so we threw it in the livewell and headed back to the ramp to get pictures before the release since I had left my GoPro in the truck. It was time to head in anyway. My buddy and I disagreed on the weight quite a bit (his guess was more than mine) plus we didn’t have a scale in the boat, so ya’ll can just come up with your own estimates. I seem to be on a trend of under-estimating my fish recently anyway.

The next day, I took an ABFer out on a guide trip to Lady Bird, but nothing terribly exciting to report other than the fact that we confirmed it was an afternoon bite. The morning was much colder than the previous day, and seemed to shut the fish down even more for the first several hours. From what I had found the day before, I was thinking we just needed to be in the right areas, but it very much proved to be a timing thing and that I had caught most of my fish the day before between 11:30 and 1:00 for a reason. It was a beautiful morning, but the fish were uncooperative until, once again, about 11:30, only having put 1 or 2 fish in the boat before then. In the last 30-45 minutes or so, it seems like we caught 4-6 decent fish really quick, but client had an obligation to make it to and we had to get off the water at noon. I suspect with the fluctuating morning temps right now, we will be switching back and forth for a little while between it being a morning bite or an afternoon bite.

POC Oct. 2-4

Fished POC with Todd and Dean. We started fishing on friday around noon in SAB with the wind gusting out of the east and caught several keeper black drum to 23 inches, redfish to 27 3/4in. trout to 17in. and a sheep’s head.

On Saturday the fishing was, a little slower as we only managed 5 reds to 26 ½ inches a black drum and a few trout to 19 inches.

Sunday we ended up with 2 redfish (one being a tagged fish) up to 28 ¼, 4 trout a black drum and a flounder.

Had a great time considering my psoriasis kicked my butt. We fished several areas and picked fish up about every spot. All the fishing was wading. I did happen to see my first spinner shark bust out of the water wich was pretty cool. Good times!! Pics coming soon.

Lbj 10/04

Fished Sunday - started mid lake and worked toward the Colorado. Had a few mid lake on Chistmas tree senkos and chartreuse Red Eye shad . Couple fish on watermelon seed BBH on deeper boat houses. One better fish on a brush pile up the Colorado, little over 4 lb., on C-rig french fry.
Probably had 10 fish, 6 weighers in about 7 hours of fishing until I got fed up with the jet skiers. Anybody having any luck?

Fayette 10/5

A trip to Fayette yesterday leaves me scratching my head try to decipher if I had a good time or not. Got on the water around noon and searched for fish all day long. I found one bite witch resulted with a hook up around 3pm on the baffle dike. I continue to search for another bit, but its hours later before I find one. Around 6pm, I started catching one here and one there, but it was real slow. But thirty minutes before sunset, the bite went ballistic in every direction you threw your bait. As fast as I could get my line out, bam, fish on. I only had a few slot fish, but every fish was fat and healthy looking. For the time I put in, seventeen fish is not good, but the day ended much better than I had anticipated due to how the other seven hours went. The good days are coming, maybe next month will be crazy fun with forty to fifty fish per person.

The water temp continues to drop, 85 degrees in most areas. Bait fish are thick and they are scattered all over the place.

Bastrop 10/5 report and scorpion warning

First of all, when I hit the men’s restroom at the North shore ramp Monday morning, I saw a scorpion with pinchers and tail up walking around. It crawled under the baseboard before I could step on it, so it still lives in there. That’s the first time I’ve noticed a scorpion in the men’s room, but I’ve never paid attention before and the lighting is bad in there. So, watch out.

I took my wife and son out for a morning of fishing. We fished from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM. It was nice and cloudy most of the morning with temps in the 70s and light winds.
My son went out in his kayak to the discharge and fished there most of the day with 14 fish total on flukes.
I started at the Dam Road cove and caught a couple of unders and a couple of slot fish and then finished out at the discharge with a few more slot fish all on Big Bite trick sticks.
My wife didn’t boat any fish but had several bites. She found out the hard way that going fishing doesn’t mean going catching. :)

Lt 10-5

Put in at Pace Bend at 230 and fished until about 5. Motored right across the lake and fished a bank with a bunch of docks and submerged brush. Threw a chart spinner for a while, but did not get a bit. Did not get a bite along the bank, but as soon as I pulled into the creek/cove directly across from Tatum Cove Boat ramp, started getting bit pretty good. The ticket seemed to be square bill cranks in shad patterns thrown very close to rock chunk banks on the shady side of the creek. Presence of brush did not seem to matter. Probably put 15 in the boat…all LT specials. Caught one Guad that would have kept. Did catch a few on a smoke/glitter grub. Fishing seems to be getting better every day. Got rained on for about five minutes, but it was a dang nice day to be on the water. Good luck!

Lake Travis 10/4

We fished from about 10am-3pm. I caught 4 bass and my fiance caught 2 bass but missed a few. Most of the bass were small and caught around submerged brush. Only one caught next to a marina. I mostly threw a KVD square bill shad while she mostly threw a white chatterbait. I got some nibbles on a kind of smokey clear colored grub with blue flakes.

We’re newbies to bass fishing though so we had fun. Looking forward to doing more fishing.

She caught this one. Is this a Guadalupe bass?

Greetings! New Member here

Been following the Forum for some time and figured it time to join in on the circus!

Big fan of anything outdoors. Love to hunt and fish. Live in NW Austin and been out on Travis and Austin a bit this year. Fishing has been tough on Travis, but getting better. Austin has been hit and miss. Some good toads still in there.

Anyhow, I’ll see if I can’t get out and catch or kill anything and share that experience with you all.

Looking forward to learning/honing skills from some of you. Even some of you goofy mofos on here. Y'all are too nice to some of these cats!

Can’t promise I’ll be that guy! :p

Poc 10/2-4

Pulled a last minute to POC last weekend. If you are thinking about it, STOP THINKING and go. If idiot novices like Bob and me can get a close limit of trout, anyone can.
We tried for the Jetty on Sat. morning but the there was a wind out of the NE that kept steady 4fters rolling into the ICW. We tried, we got drenched, we decided to to hit the shallows…. We caught fish. Only bait available was croaker. Shrimp boats couldn’t get out due to conditions. We caught fish on live bait and arti’s. Thank you Doug, Redfish Magic was a kicker.

Saturdays pull was a short limit of 17"-18" trout, 3 flounder, and, and 1-35" red. LOTS of shorts in the trinity. Sunday also got us lots of shorts and 1 nice keeper trout for the box (3 hrs).

SPI, and the Brownsville Shipping Channel next week, for 5 dayz……. Here’s to the Snookie.

Who to call?

I have noticed when I launch my boat at the boat ramp under the 360 bridge, it is really dark when backing and trying to see the three ramps. There is a big street light pointed towards the boat ramp, but it is blocked by a big tree and provides no light on the ramp itself.
Who should be called to see if they would trim the tree or install another light that would shine on the ramp.
I don’t see them listening to a bunch of fishermen, but I still think something should be said.

Gettin' in a LLM state of mind...

There’s nothing like a week in Port Isabel to decompress.

We booked our room at the White Sands today. It’s no longer run by the Marchan family, but it’s still a great property. 7th night is still free. Off-season prices are in effect - $59/night plus taxes for a suite. Hard to beat.

We booked our guide trip yesterday - Mike Knox was recommended. I’m looking forward to fishing with him. He’ll be the fourth guide we’ve fished with down there…nice to have a variety. (Lou Austin and Gilbert Vela were the most recent - both good.)

After that trip, we’ll have the rest of the week to explore in The Cayenne.

I’m SO ready.

Bastrop 10/3 - Good but expensive day

Headed out to Bastrop yesterday afternoon and fished from 3:30-8pm. North wind but not too bad. Wind calmed as the sun went down. Fished mainly on the discharge side near the reeds - water temp was between 89-92. Fishing really turned on around 6:30 and they were still hitting when we left at 8. I threw a shallow shad crank (0-3 feet), rattlesnakes weightless and senkos. They didn’t really care. Did not see or look for much schooling action in open water. Ended up with 30+ I would say.

I made it home but as I was backing in to the driveway I noticed one of the trailer wheels making some noise. It was hot as sh!t and I immediately knew something was wrong - it was also missing the outside cap which I knew was not good and I hadn’t noticed it missing before. I’m really surprised the wheel didn’t come off and go flying down the road. This is my fault - this is a used boat and trailer that I’ve had since January and I’ve been meaning to re-pack the bearings but this will be a costly lesson in waiting too long. The outside bearing basically disintegrated and it cut a groove into the spindle as well as wearing the last washer onto the spindle so as to I can not remove it now.

To move forward, everything I’ve been reading is pointing to having to replace the axle as you can not simply replace the spindle. Replacing the axle will involve welding. Looks like a bunch of ABFer’s in the past have used Spillar Hitches on S. Congress and would recommend taking the trailer to them. Am I correct that this is a weld job and that I can’t salvage/replace the spindle without replacing the axle as well? I have a tandem trailer and I’ve read it is ok to ride on 3 tires but make sure to chain or strap the exposed axle up so as not to have it make any contact with the road - any opinions on that? I’m going to give Spillar Hitches a call tomorrow and hopefully Gary can input his 2 cents but does anybody have a rough estimate on cost or any other suggested actions to take?

The Strop 10/3and10/4

-I hit up Bastrop yesterday 10/3 for a solo trip. Fished dusk till noon.
air temp at launch 55*
water temp 83*
calm winds pushing to 5-10mph later
I had in mind to go out and see if the fall shallow pattern was starting and it didn’t disappoint.I started out with a Pop R in 3-7 fow.I had 7 in the boat before 8am. swithed to texas rigged plastics and had a few bites but that was about it.Tried to get a square bill bite but no takers. Off the water at noon.

Me and the wife got on the water this morning 10/4 at 7:30 and I went right back to where I had the best luck yesterday. Tried the Pop R again and caught one keeper on it. Swithed to a chatter bait slow rolled through the grass and picked up 2 healthy 17 inchers and one 16 that weighed probably about a pound. it was the skinniest fish I have seen on Bastrop. My wife threw her trusty Carolina rig all morning and didn’t get bit. off the water around 10:30.
air temp 59 at launch
water temp 83
wind out of the north 5 mph.

Local pond report 10-4

went back to the local pond with the kiddo. He wanted to throw his new hula popper and catch one bass. Temp was in upper seventies around 10:30. Water was down a foot, stained but clearer then usual, and looked better then a couple weeks ago. He threw his popper and I threw a t-rig water melon red flake fluke. No luck. So, he switched to a watermelon black seed fluke and I switched to a trig senko in watermelon with red and green flake (basically my number one bait on the pond). I hooked into one but he shook it while I was passing the pole to the kiddo. A couple minutes later I felt a tap and I layed the wood on one. Passed it to kiddo. Line starts stripping out as he is trying to reel, so I tightened the drag a smidge. He even said, whimpering “dad, I think it’s to big”. He kept at it though. Got it close to shore and he handed pole to me, grabbed his net and gave it a go. It was to big for the net. Unhooked it and he released it back in the water. He was pretty pumped. He then needed to pee in the bushes and wanted to play on the playground.

Lake Pflugerville 10/3/15

Todd and I started the morning on the same wavelength. We both were primarily throwing soft plastics. Todd quickly got a couple in the boat to my chagrin, as I flubbed a couple of good strikes. Todd got a couple more (by boat flipping ‘em, LOL) but now I was matching him fish for fish.

The water vis dropped to around two feet, and I up-sized my tackle and got good bite. The fish swam under the boat and headed for the thick grass. I yelled at Todd for help. Without hesitating, he grabbed my line and boat flipped this lean four pounder. Thanks Todd!

Saved the skunk

Headed down the street to Lake Pflugerville this morning around 9:30am. Fished till about 11am without a bite so I decided to head back to the truck. I’m almost back to the truck when I see a decent bass sitting in about a foot of water. Decided to throw my senko out, kind of expecting him to be spooked off. I throw it about 10 yards passed him in some weeds and started slowly twitching it toward him. Got close and he swam up to investigate but didn’t take it. Threw it out again, got it close to him and slowed it down, letting it sit for about 5-10 seconds before barely twitching it again. He turned and grabbed it by the end, I was a little too excited to I tried to set the hook too early, I don’t even think he had the hook in his mouth. Cursing myself as he started to jolt away, but then noticed he turned and settled just about 6 feet from where he was. Decided to throw it at him again, surely he’s not going to take it again.. Same technique, nice and slow, got it close he turned and grabbed it, this time I was ready, waited a second and set the hook. Fish on… Measured 15 inches. Not bad… at least I saved the skunk and it was the first bass I’ve caught by visually spotting. I saw a larger one in the same area but it swam off. Tournament Newbie (No boat)

Hey y'all my name is Jonathan. I love fishing, but have never actually been in a tournament. My dad who is an excellent fisher, going on his 7th combat tour overseas, has decided that when he gets back he is going to buy a bass boat. I want to start improving my fishing skills so that one day I can kick some (b)ass in a tournament with my pops. I am looking for someone who wouldn’t mind me riding on their boat to fish with, I will even chip in for gas. I’m even willing to fish in a tandem kayak haha, anything to get me some more exposure to our beautiful lakes. I live 10 minutes from Lake Austin so until then I’ll be bank fishing. Tight lines y'all!

Lawns worse than Rice

So much for that argument about rice using more water!
Misinformed again by COA and all the experts!
I would say read it and weep, but Austin’s known for even when presented with evidence they are wrong, they still believe utter BS!

Fishing with Dennis

Shore anglers are also catching a few bass, smaller perch and a trout. All fish will start cruising shallower water as temperatures continue to drop.

Austin Area Bassin' Video

I’ve had several GoPro clips piling up over the past several months that haven’t found a way into any of my other videos, so I figured I’d just throw some of them together into a compilation video to feature on the front page of my website. It’s basically just me layin’ down the hammer on some basses. There’s clips from a few different area lakes (mostly Lake Austin). Basically it’s a just-for-fun video. :p None of this footage was taken from trips that I was guiding on. These are all just out fishin’ and havin’ fun. I think a little bit of Wednesday Nighter footage too.
