LBJ Crappie 8/31

Fished LBJ with Treys parents. We fished mid lake brush piles in 16-25 FOW with jigs and minnows. They ended up with 29 crappie up to 14 ¼ inches. Ken caught the longest crappie of the year on LBJ and it went 1.47 lbs. If that crappie was caught in the spring it might sniff 2 lbs. The bite was really light today. They were hard to catch hanging deep in the brush. A bonus was a few nice eating size channel/blue cats and a nice bream. Had a blast with these two. Treys mom Chris is a heck of a fisherwoman. She watched her pole like a hawk on a rabbit, nothing got by her. They both did awesome with the finicky/light bite. Good times!! I just bought a new PC and now having WIFI issues so pics coming soon.

As some of you already know, and those others just finding out, I will be relocating to Dallas for work. I just wanted to take a moment and thank you guys for making me feel welcome and for the opportunity I have had to meet some of the best anglers in Texas. You will be missed and you guys are a great community that can’t be replicated. Thanks again, it was because of this site that I got submerged into the world of tournament bass fishing that has been life changing for the best. Fish Finder Help Please

I finally got around to adding a fish finder (Lowrance Elite 4X chirp) to my kayak and took it out for the first time Saturday. It worked fantastic until the sun was really up, and then I could barely make anything out. Looking for any tips, tricks or suggestions on how to make the unit easier to view in direct sunlight. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer.

My next question...

I have a Lowrance Elite 7 FishFinder and am trying to figure out how to keep the time displayed on the screen. I did figure out that to get to the setting display for the time, the chart screen has to be up by itself instead of on split screen. But can’t get the time to be displayed on the screen below the speed of the boat. Went to BPS tonight before they closed and the two salesman I talked to couldn’t figure it out either (They couldn’t get it out of the DISPLAY MODE so maybe that’s why they couldn’t figure it out)
Any suggestions?????
Calling Lowrance Tech Support tomorrow to see if they can tell me.

Bastrop 8/30

After a month long layoff we finally got a day to get on the water. I didn’t really know what to expect being off the water this long but history kind of repeats itself. So we started with what worked for us last year.
We launched at 9:00am and had a slight breeze out of the west moving to 5mph out of the south.
air temp 80
water temp unknown but it was hot.
We didn’t have to go far and there was a little schooling action just out of the North ramp. Small spoons burned through the schools and a bone colored Spook jr. worked for us. Seems like we spent more time waiting for them to come up then we did fishing for them. But when they did come up we made it count. Ended up with only 4 boated and a half dozen came off. They went down and we made a move to try a shallow bite. My wife caught one in camping loop cove and by then the sun was high and no breeze so it was hot. We got off the water around 1:00.
Ended up my wife with 3 and me 3. Kind of a tough morning but neither of us skunked. Not a lot of boat traffic either.Everyone was pretty spread out.Felt good to get back out and put a few fish in the boat. Nothing of size though. Biggest was an 18 incher and it was skinny.

Lakeline area spot?

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and just getting back into fishing more seriously. I would love any tips or info to help me land more fish. I’m in the Lakeline mall area and have fished a few of the ponds nearby as well as brushy creek lake with little or no success. In the past I have rarely fished for bass, my main targets were crappie and cats, so I am pretty new to lures larger than 1/8oz.

These have some minor boat rash and nicks but looks great.

This is one of my favorite frog/flipping rods. Cork is in great condition.

Cork has some wear but overall is in great condition. These falcon rods are awesome. American made, very light and sensitive.

Cork is really good on this one. Really good square bill and topwater rod

Falcon Lizard dragger 7ft heavy $75
Cork is worn on this one but overall rod is in good condition. This was my go to texas rig rod.

LA 8/29 Nice fish-way too skinny

Caught a couple of 2-3 #er’s on squarebill crank in 3-5 fow they were pretty normal looking fish.
I switched to top water about 730ish and pulled this potential monster off a rock that was slightly visible a foot or so below the surface
(Water was 67 and slightly murky). I say potential monster because the fish was really skinny, I didn’t weight her because I wanted to get her back in the water quickly, but I estimated 5 and she should have weighed 7 to 8.

Is this the “decline” of the LA monsters or do the fish get skinny in the late summer?

Summary:

Had a great time fishing with Tommy Tidwell and some friends out on Lake Granger. This was my first time to fish for Crappie and it looks like I found the right guide. Tommy definitely knows his stuff and lives up to his reputation as a Crappie expert. We fished submerged structure with Crappie jigs on light tackle and held on as the bit our lures. Slightly different from dropping the hammer on a bass but just as fun and exciting when you pull up a nice slab. Anyway, we had a great time and will be back. Apparently this is a prime time of the year for Crappie. Give Tommy Tidwell a call, he’s got some openings and will definitely put you on some fish. The 4 of us ended up with 50 in the ice box. Can’t wait to eat some and finally get a taste of what everyone says about Crappie being the best eat'n fish around.

Our first Saturday morning tournament will start on September 5th
Take off will be at safe light from city park
Once your chip is called you must come by the TBT boat for live we’ll check
All chips back on the table by 11:00 am
All teams must draw a chip for a team #
If you have fish to bring to the scales chip must be on the table by 11am
Entery fee is 40.00 that includes big bass
All fish must be 14"
A team is 1 or two anglers in a boat
All boats and anglers must follow all local and state laws
You can not fish within 50’ fifty feet from another anglers boat that is in the tournament
We will be doing this until lake Travis starts fishing better

I had a cancelled trip today so my boys and I hit up LBJ. We fished mid lake brush piles in 16-25 FOW on minnows and nibbles with jigs. It was a nice day on the water until all the boaters came out. Fished from 0800- 1200. Pics coming soon. We ended up with 34 crappie and 5 channel cats.

White Bass Fest 2015! 9-13-15 Lake Austin

White bass tournament.
I know we all prefer to fish for those big, black beauties but this one is for the whites.
It will go from 7am to 12 noon.
We will have a fish fry at the end.
Because of the fish fry, you can keep the white bass alive or on ice.
We will be weighing a limit of whites:25 white bass
$40 entry fee including $5 big bass
Big bass will be a largemouth bass over 5 pounds, this will be required to be kept alive and released alive.
Artificials only, trolling IS allowed.
The primary goals of this tournament are to have fun, thin the hordes of white bass devouring the baitfish, and raise a little money for a cause, which is going to be austin pets alive.


We will also have fries, hush puppies, and if i can get them, boudin balls!
I am open to suggestions for upgrades and/or modifications to this setup and feel free to pm me with ideas.
I look forward to this tournament and hopt to see you all out there.
The more anglers fish, the more white bass we remove. That should make those lake austin black bass fill out their figures better once the bait is more plentiful.
That paired with the brush pile project i have lined up for december should bring Austin back closer to it’s former glory.

Lakeway city park

Hit the park at about 7am in the small cove right next to the cliffs on the right.
Tried a green/brown jig on light brush, shallow chartreuse crank and wacky rigged weightless senko. No bites.
Threw a 3’ drop shot with a green and red KVD dream shot worm (then bumped up to a wacky rigged watermelon seed Zoom finesse worm on the drop shot), and proceeded to pull in 5 bass in about 45 minutes. Most were smaller (as usual on the dreamshot), the last one (on zoom finesse) was a little over 13", nice and chunky, good fight. All largemouth, all chubby.
Definitely a good early AM bite, stopped around 830am, as they moved out to deeper waters.

What happened to the site & Kudos to all of you

Some of us have been around here a while. My routine to some degree the last few years consists of chilling out on ABF. It’s loungetime, a distraction. A little less than a year ago, I took on 2 more jobs. So I am employed by 3 companies. That schedule combined with selling my own real estate, combined with my growing knowledge and aficionado for saltwater angling; I decided to sell my bass boat. I’ve seen folks go their different ways. I never went anywhere, just got super busy. I haven’t posted on the TTZ forum because I don’t feel like I’ve got anything to contribute since I am out of the bass tournament world. All I could offer is some BS and an occasional saltwater report. Things are not like they used to be around here, but my life is good and I hope ya'lls is going good as well. I’ve met many friends on here. Too many to count and all good people. Too many friends to name but if you are reading this and we have hung out, you know who you are. So, I’m not sure what’s happening with the site, but, just want to say Kudo’s to you my friends; some of the coolest folks I have met in Austin.

RV for sale

I’m unloading my RV. It is a 2012 Keystone Cougar. 29Ft Bunkhouse with Slide. It will sleep 10 people. Very good shape other than the slide out is acting up right now. I have an appt on Sept 1st to get it fixed, other than that everything works great. Blue book on this thing is 17K, I’m selling for $16K as the slide out repair will most likely be around 1K (it is just off the track, motor is good). You can tow this with a ½ ton truck. Kudos to Grant Goodner & Honest Air Cond.

Sunday, 8-23-15, I sent Grant Goodner a message stating I “might” need an electrician on Monday 8-24-15. I could not give a specific time or exactly what I needed because Honest Air Cond., was installing a new a/c and heater at my house and they told me I may need an electrician during the install. Grant’s reply was “you will be taken care of, call me”. Sure enough, during the installation I was told to call an electrician. I called Grant, he arrived in a very short time, took care of everything I needed, assisted the installers and after he was finished he hung around for a bit to make sure everything was working correctly. He then charged me what I thought was not enough. Grant did an excellent job and assisted the a/c installers. He even picked up a part for them when he went to get parts he needed.
Honest Air is owned by Floyd Smith who I think has fished some tournaments with ABF or TTZ. I have used his services before and he has a very good company and products.
Grant works at Integrated Solar Power and was excellent.

I plan to be up north till lake freezes over. The later it gits, the better the bite up here in God’s Country. Mechanic referal : Toyota 4runner

LA pain in the ass/lets work together thread

Well I was on the little bastards pretty good last spring and early summer, but since the heat settled in back around early July its been a different story. Before the heat I was catching them with a BBH on a ¼ oz shaky head pretty much up and down the lake on transitions between shallow flats and deep water. The more exposed the cover on the flat and the more boat traffic the better. I’d often switch up to a TX rig or crank bait after I found them thick and get a few bigger ones. Eventually the bite on the flats went away and then the transition bite was next to go. I swapped out multiple baits/presentations but hardly ever get bit. That tells me I’m not even on the fishes when I’m fishing.

Lately I’ve been driving out to Bastrop and have been crushing the schoolies. It’s been a lot of fun, but I’m ready to start the hunt again on LA. If anyone is willing to point me in a direction they may have been having some luck, or heck even if you know where they are but haven’t been able to catch them, I’d love a heads-up on that. Maybe if several of us share some info we can put it all together and get on more fish! Thanks!

Lake LBJ 8/25

Fished LBJ today with some good clients. Day two in a row the slabs had lock jaw. We fished in water that was 14-25 FOW. We ended up with 10 keepers. We could not buy a bite. There was some nice black bass caught up to 6 LBS. Slow day but good times with these guys. All the shit talking between Danny, Travis, and James made the day!

Quary Ponds West of Webberville?

Hello All, Last week i kayaked the Colorado river east of Austin around Webberville, fished Geileland Creek and caught a dozen or so LMB, not to bad for fishing from 3pm to 6pm, worst part of the day. Late in the afternoon on the way back to Webberville, i explored the “Quarry Ponds” adjacent to the the river (West of Webberville, north bank of the river). At a quick glance, the water looks great, lots of vegitation and many hiding places, area looks fantastic for some early morning Bass fishing. I am wondering if anyone out there has fished, or regularly fishes, the “Ponds” connected to the Colorado river. Thoughts anyone? Thanks all!!!

Fly Rod for Bass and Saltwater Fishing?

For a while now I have wanted a heavier fly rod that I can throw big bass flies with. I am also going to be traveling in the fall and want to try my hand at some light saltwater fishing.

Is it possible to find a rod that can double for both? I am still really new to fly fishing and have only used an 8'6" 5 weight so far. I started reading some online, but people seem to recommend different lengths for saltwater fishing, and some specialized bass rods are pretty short, like 7-8’.

I’m not sure what my budget for a rod is yet. I am having to buy a decent amount of other equipment, so still figuring out quite a few things. I don’t think I can afford 2 more fly rods on top of everything else, so getting something that is multi-use would be ideal.

Question about boat trailer taillights...

My Nitro boat trailer tail lights work fine for the turn signals, emergency flashers, and brake lights, but the running lights do not work. Any suggestions?
I went to BPS and bought a new lighting plug to plug into the rear of my truck and also bought a new 36" trailer wire pigtail to extend the wiring since I had one but seemed to be dirty. I replaced the plug and extension and still no running lights.
Any suggestions or way to check to see if there is power getting to that brown wire? I am thinking that it must be in the wiring harness attached to the trailer.

Bastrop 08-23 Evening

My wife and I went out last night to avenge my rather poor performance the previous week during The Fish Fry That Wasn’t. We fished out of the Northshore ramp putting in our yaks at 7:00pm, about the time most people were leaving. The wind was out of the south around 5-10 mph, brisk enough to keep the mosquitos at bay. The lake still looks like its a foot to two feet low. Consequently, most of my favorite spots didn’t produce.

We started out throwing GB rattlesnakes, but that wasn’t working. I switched over to dropshot Roboworms, tiny flukes, and crappie jigs to better emulate the size and shape of the baitfish the schoolies were known to target, but no joy. That was a surprise, since even when it’s slow, I can usually at least pick up a couple or so on the dropshot. Not last night, though. After an hour and a half of absolutely no bites, I decided to try a spot I’d never really focused on that much. My wife anchored up in about six feet of water and I went deeper, around fifteen feet. I went back to the t-rigged GB rattlesnakes since dropshotting in eel grass is an exercise in futility. My wife was throwing a t-rigged GY senko. She said something about bass surface feeding behind her, but I dismissed that as carp. Then she said she was getting bit. Weeds, I thought. Then her rod twitched enough to see she had been bit. Eh, what’s one hit? I ignored her until she started chortling to herself as she landed her first bass, a fat 15.5" fish. Blind luck. Then, she immediately caught another. Okay, enough. Honey….? What bait are you using?

I re-anchored in six feet of water, re-rigged with GY senkos, and it was on for me, too. The sun had set by this point and it was really pleasant. The lake was empty, and except for the coyotes and the buzzards, we had the place to ourselves. Over the next hour, we caught a half-dozen bass each, 4 unders, the rest slots. The slots werent monsters, but its fun to catch healthy, 17-18" Bastrop fatties on medium action gear. Usually, one of us has a much better night than the other, but this time, we matched each other bass for bass. We even had a double at one point. The bite died around 10:00pm, so we headed back to the ramp. The area close to the ramp usually yields at least one good fish, and it happened last night, too. Ana had a nice one splashing around, but she hadn’t set the hook well enough since she was drift fishing and her big fish of the night jumped off. I thought we’d end the night in a 6-all tie, but I caught a buzzer-beater to win. Well, kinda. The bass was the biggest of the evening, a 19-inch zombie bass that I wasn’t sure I’d even hooked until he listlessly popped to the surface. Seriously, this bass reminded me of Dave Chappelle’s Tyrone the Crackhead character. I think he was hanging at the edge of the ramp waiting for discarded senkos to wash down so he could fuel his senko addiction when he inhaled mine, instead. But, big bass is big bass, at least that’s how we play the game CPR-style. The Hawg Trough doesnt lie.

My best five went 87", which isn’t horrible for 3.5 hours of fishing. It certainly wasnt one of those, nonstop, crazy hundred-plus bass nights I’ve had in the past, but it made up for a disappointing previous outing on Bastrop. I found a new spot, renewed my faith in my night-fishing mojo, and had the chance to catch and release Tyrone. A nice night, and a great way to bid adieu to summer - back to school, suckas!

These scales are certified so they are great for tournaments or sharelunkers/lake records.
If you go to equalizerscales.com this has the scale, the waterproof cover and a battery pack.
The battery pack is a stealthcam battery in a weatherproof box. I believe this battery pack is the same one used by the local weekly tournament held at emma long park.
I have a rubbermaid tote that holds the scale, battery, a plastic basket for holding fish and a clipboard for entries, i can include the clipboard if you want, maybe even a pen and some paper.

Lake Buchanan 8/24

Fished lake Buchanan today with a buddy. We arrived on the water at 0730 with water Temps at 85 degrees. We fished from the tip of shaw to the lower end in 4-60 FOW with jigs and nibbles. We did NOT catch one crappie. It’s been a long time since I’ve been skunked. It was a nice day on the water and marked some good spots for spring time fishing. Saw several black bass in the shallows around rocks and willows. If I was a bass fisherman I’d get out and mark some of those spots. Most of the baitfish I graphed were in deeper water.

This will probably be the last Tuesday Nighter I will be making an appearance at this year. Opening day of dove season is next Tuesday and I will be after the birds for a while. Ronnie usually keeps the tournaments going a week or so past labor day depending on attendance, but then he will shut them down for the fall.

You must be inside the “no wake” bouy before 9:15
No dead fish will be weighed
Bag limit is 5 fish
Lmb must touch 12" but not 14" or touch 18" or more as the lake has a slot limit.
*Smallmouth and Spotted Bass must be 14" or greater

08/20 McQueeney Lake

Hit up McQueeney Lake with my fishing bud Rory. We went out with Charles Whited of Barefoot Fishing. Fished from about 7:00 til 12:45. We fished water discharge, edges of lily pads, lots of lily pads, some bridge pilings and some banks. We caught 21 total, most of those were in lily pads, and all were before that front blew in. The bite died after that. Weather couldn’t have been more perfect temp wise. Only thunder and lightning cut our trip short. Did most of our fishing with worms, frogs and cranks.




Charles was awesome. Very personable and knowledgeable. It was a great learning experience for me as I’d never been bass fishing on a boat before. I’m pretty sure he was going to ask me to tag along to canyon with him. I think he was just a little star struck. Anyway, great day.

Abu Garcia Reels For Sale

I have a some good deals on some Older and Newer Abu Garcia Reels. The Older Reels belonged to my Grandfather, who won them in various tournaments in the 90’s. When he passed away about 5 years ago I was given them by my grandmother, they were in his closet in the boxes, and look to all be made in Sweden, Look absolutely Brand New and have been in my closet for 5 years…………They really have to be seen to be appreciated. The three “Newer” reels were bought by me for a Fishing trip, one is a Revo Spinning reel Inshore 40 (never even got put on a rod) and the other two are Revo Inshores Bait casters (Only one got used for a Day, has a little rash on the top)

I do not have PayPal, but except postal money orders, or cash if someone wants all of them I could meet face to face in Austin. The Reels are located in La Grange…………here is what I got

I have 7 Brand New Rods for Sale that I bought from Tackle Warehouse over the course of about 6 months wanting to start Fishing some tournaments, but ended up having to sell my boat.
